How do I keep geraniums over winter?

First, you want to cut any spent flowers or dead parts. I kept mine in the garage, left them by the window, so they still get some sunlight. They might looked kind of leggy and dead during the winter time, but you still see them green. As soon as the weather become warmer and the sun start to shine more often, like there is no more freezing nights, I will put them outside, trim dead looking part, start to watering and give them some food again. Now they are all healthy and bursting with blooms. One thing you don't want to do is watering too much and too often during their 'hibernation time'. Water them as little as possible and leave them on the drier side, but not bone dry. You don't want to get gnats or mold.

My mom used to put them in the basement for the winter.
Reply:We have used two methods. Break the stems off back to the main base, pull them, shake the dirt off of the roots, put them in brown paper sacks and store in the basement until early spring, then repot. Or we have cut them back and put them in a room with a sunny window and allowed them to begin regrowing all winter.
