Is it easy to grow Geraniums from seeds ?

I dont want to pay a fortune for red geraniums this year - can I grow them form seed easily - where is the best place to buy good quality seeds and are they easy to grow?

Depends on what success you normally have with seeds. If you've grown a lot of plants from seed in the past then give it a go, but the seed can be expensive for pelargoniums (geraniums), about ￡2 for 18 seeds.



Most people grow them from cuttings, or cut back the plant every winter and keep them somewhere frost free until the spring frosts are over. Here's a link on how to:

Not that many gardeners that I've known would grow from seed, but if you want to then Thompson and Morgan give these guidelines:



Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 70-75F (20-25C). Sowing Depth: 1/16in (1.5mm). Sowing Time: Mid January to Mid March. Germination can take from 3-21 days. Provide a steady soil temperature both day and night for best results.



So maintaining this temperature could be difficult for a novice.

Reply:Geraniums are easy to propagate. Spend the money this year for the plants and when the season is over start next years. Take cuttings and put them in water to root then transfer them to 4 in. pots with a good quality potting soil.

sill, only disadvantage is the seeds are expensive you

only get 6-8 seeds to a packet.

Reply:geraniums are easy to grow but in order for them to bloom by seed in may or june you should have had them planted by february they have a long growning time from seed to flower-you might want to consider buying potted geraniums this year and start from seed next year.
Reply:Yes you can, easy to grow. I also have grown them from seed, and then saved the seeds from the bloom heads and grown more. But geraniums are very slow to grow from seed, takes several months. The 3 or 4 inch plants you see in the garden centers are usually cuttings, it would take about 3 months to get one the size of the small ones people usually use as bedding plants. In other words, if you want some for this summer, you are too late to try from seed. You can certainly go ahead and plant some, but expect to overwinter them and see them bloom this fall and winter. Geraniums can easily be dug up and kept indoors over winter and replanted in the spring, after frost, I have had some in past years I replanted 3 or 4 years in a row.
Reply:Yes it is quite easy just plant them in a propagator place it on a window sill and wait, when they are big enough transplant them into pots, the seeds are not very cheap but any good garden centre should stock them. Alternately you can take cuttings from a mature plant using a sharp knife and rooting hormone, just cut off a stem about 2" long below a leaf, cut off the leaf dip it in the rooting hormone about 1/2" and plant into the propagator, when it starts to grow plant into a pot. Reply:I think the above answers have covered everything pretty much. Geraniums (more correctly known as Pelargoniums) are easy to grow from seed but because of the expense are usually propagated from cuttings. Why are seeds expensive: because Pelargoniums (unlike many other flowers) only produce ONE seed from ONE flower, so one plant with 20 flowers on it will only produce 20 seeds unlike, say, poppies which produce about 200-300 seeds (or more) from a single flower.
