I heard that you can save geraniums from this year and dig them up.............?

roots and all and hang them upside down in a dry place over the winter and replant them next year. That is crazy!

Can this really be done?

Yes, in fact I just did that for mine yesterday. You have to dig them out of the dirt with roots and all. Shake off the excess dirt but leave what won't come off on the roots. You have to do this around this time of year (I live in the Midwest) before the geraniums die and while there is green and maybe some flowers left. Then you just hang them upside down (I use a wire coat hanger) and hang them either in your basement or garage. Somewhere that they won't get frost bite and will stay dry. Then in the Spring you plant them, roots in the dirt of course, and they will eventually bloom but they will be much bigger than last year. They are kinda ugly at first but once they are planted again they will be beautiful bushy flowery geraniums. Good Luck
Reply:that is how you do pointsettias. for geraniums..i just go dig a foot around the plant and repot with poting soil, wood chips and miracle grow. it gets stronger and does well alll year long, i have 14 of them.
Reply:I live in Florida, and just keep them in pots year round on the porch. You being in a colder climate, that probably wouldn't work for you. Could you put them in a cellar, if you have one, in pots, for the winter?
Reply:I heard you put them in a pot in a cool dark place , like a basement, and leave them all winter then plant them in the spring. I never tried it because they are so cheap to buy every year, like $3.around my area.
Reply:um... mail me
Reply:You heard right, I do it all the time. Just bring the pots in and put them in a brown paper bag, stand them up right, even if the dirt drys up, in the spring when it's time water and they come right up. By the way, if you want to start new geraniums just cut a branch off and hang it in a glass of water, (don't let the cut end dry from lack of water), leave it for a peroid of time and you will see roots growing, Just transplant and you have another plant to give to a friend or yourself.
